Is Starting a Dropshipping Business Really Right for You?

  • by

Starting a dropshipping business is a very powerful way to source and sell inventory without any or minimal upfront costs. But the truth is, starting a dropshipping business is not for everybody. In some cases, it can actually be a lot more of a hassle than it’s worth, and in other cases, it can be  the best thing that has happened to you when starting a dropshipping business

Let’s take a look at when starting a dropshipping business is right and when it is not right for you.

Starting a Dropshipping Business is Right for You If;

  • You’re just getting started with your online boutique or store and can’t afford inventory. In this case, starting a dropshipping business may not just be the best option, it may be your ONLY option.
  • You want to have a wider selection available to you in your online boutique or store than you can currently afford. Starting a dropshipping business allows you to have access to a wide range of merchandise, so you don’t get stuck with inventory that might not sell.
  • You’re not averse to taking risks (such as the drop shipper being out of an item a customer orders, or having shipping issues). In that case you could consider starting a dropshipping business.
  • You want to try and test out the market before investing big on buying wholesale inventory for your online boutique or store. Starting a dropshipping business is a great way to test the market and determine what products people are most likely going to be interested in before you buy in bulk for your online boutique or store.

Starting A Dropshipping Business is NOT Right for You If;

  • You can afford to buy inventory upfront. There’s really no point using a dropshipper if you can afford all the inventory you need to start your online boutique or store, because you’ll usually get cheaper prices just buying wholesale in bulk. In that case starting a dropshipping business may not be best for you.
  • Starting a dropshipping business isn’t right for you if you want to be in control of your inventory and would rather not deal with any potential hassles with shipping and inventory when running your online boutique or store .
  • Starting a dropshipping business again isn’t right for you if you sell products with a low profit margin. Drop shipping vendors usually sell at higher prices in comparison to wholesalers. So before you dropship any products, you need to be sure that the market isn’t over saturated or profit margins aren’t super low. e.g drop shipping things like earphones may not be worth it and best to buy wholesale in bulk.

All in all, starting a dropshipping business in my opinion is best suited for people who are just starting their online boutique or store and have little to no startup capital, but who are really passionate about starting their own online store or boutique right now or want to test the waters before they invest on too much inventory.

At the end of the day your drop shipping business success is down to using dropshipping the right way for your business.
